The White Tower was never intended to become a symbol of Thessaloniki. It was built by the Turks in the 15th century as part of the fortification of the city while over the years it was also used as a prison. In time he took various names – Leo Tower, Boold Tower and Janissary Tower – until he reached his present, which he won after the prisoner, who in exchange for his freedom, painted the Tower white.
